Halo (Beyoncé Knowles song)
"Halo" is a song recorded by American R&B singer Beyoncé Knowles for her third studio album, I Am... Sasha Fierce (2008). Columbia Records released the song as the album's fourth single to mainstream radio in the United States on January 20, 2009. Inspired by Ray LaMontagne's song "Shelter", "Halo" was composed by Ryan Tedder, Evan Bogart and Knowles. The song was originally written by Tedder and Bogart for Knowles, but according to media rumors, it was intended for Leona Lewis. Kelly Clarkson claimed that Tedder used the same musical arrangement of "Halo" in her song "Already Gone".
Musically, "Halo" is a pop power ballad. It contains elements of R&B and features piano, keyboard, synthesizer, and percussion instrumentation. The song's lyrics describe a sublime love. "Halo" received positive reviews by music critics, experiencing comparisons to Lewis' "Bleeding Love". Its production and Knowles' emotional vocals, which were noted to be reminiscent of Céline Dion's style, received praise from critics. "Halo" was nominated for Record of the Year and won Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 52nd Grammy Awards. It also won Best Song at the 2009 MTV Europe Music Awards.
"Halo" reached number one in the singles charts of Brazil, Norway and Slovakia, and it reached the top five in other countries, including Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States. It has been certified triple-platinum in Australia and double-platinum in Spain and the US. The accompanying music video for the ballad was directed by Philip Andelman and features American actor Michael Ealy. It portrays a fictional relationship between Knowles and Ealy. An alternative music video, which shows Ealy escaping from police through a forest at night, was leaked on the internet in May 2010.
The lyrics to "Halo" were changed for two of Knowles' live performances: firstly in a tribute to Michael Jackson following his death, and secondly in a tribute to the victims of the 2010 Haiti earthquake. Knowles' live performance featured on her CD/DVD I Am... Yours: An Intimate Performance at Wynn Las Vegas was nominated for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 53rd Grammy Awards. "Halo" has been covered by many artists, including Florence and the Machine in 2009 and Westlife in 2010. It was also performed on the television show Glee and was added to the international soundtrack of the Brazilian soap opera India – A Love Story.
Writing and production
"Halo" was composed by Ryan Tedder, lead vocalist of OneRepublic, alongside Evan "Kidd" Bogart and Beyoncé Knowles.[2] In an interview with HitQuarters, Kidd said that OneRepublic had to cancel their tour after Tedder broke his Achilles tendon and underwent surgery.[1] The following day, the band decided to send Tedder to Los Angeles. There, he and Kidd were socializing when Tedder expressed his desire to write a song. Kidd was opposed to the idea because Tedder, who was on crutches, was supposed to be recuperating. However, they went to Tedder's studio, where the singer Ray LaMontagne became one of the primary inspirations for "Halo". During the writing session, Kidd suggested creating a song in the style of LaMontagne's "Shelter" for Jay-Z and Knowles, and proposed the title "Halo" after hearing Tedder playing angelic chords. They wrote the song within three hours.[1][3]
"Halo" was produced by Tedder and Knowles in 2008 at Manfield Studios in Los Angeles, and at Germano and Roc The Mic Studios in New York City.[2][4] Tedder did the musical arrangements the music and played the instruments, Christian Baker assisted in recording the music, Mark "Spike" Stent mixed the track with assistance from Matt Green and Jim Caruana recorded Knowles' vocals; both tasks were done at Roc the Mic Studios.[2] "Halo" is present on the I Am... disc of the double album, as it is a ballad,[5][6] and allows Knowles to show who she is "underneath all the makeup, underneath the lights and underneath all the exciting star drama".[7] She said that she loves singing ballads because, "The music and the emotion in the story is told so much better. It's a better connection because you can hear it and it's not all these other distractions. I really wanted people to hear my voice and hear what I had to say."[5]
Release
"Halo" and "Ego" were initially planned to be released simultaneously in the US, following the 2008 dual lead singles "If I Were a Boy" and "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)".[6] However, the release of "Ego" was canceled and it was replaced by "Diva".[8] "Halo" was taken from a different disc of I Am... Sasha Fierce to "Diva"; the intention was to demonstrate the concept that Knowles has conflicting personalities.[9][10][11] This in turn portrayed the central theme of the album, which was segregated by placing its ballads and uptempo tracks on separate discs.[7][10] "Halo" was sent by Music World Entertainment and Columbia Records to contemporary hit radio playlists on January 20, 2009, [12] while "Diva" was classified for rhythmic contemporary and urban contemporary radio playlists.[13][14]
A digital EP containing a radio edit and four remixes of "Halo" was later released in the US on April 14, 2009.[15] On February 20, 2009, it was released as a two-track digital download, including a remix of "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" in Australia,[16] New Zealand,[17] and Canada,[18] where the song was also made available on a digital EP, as a maxi single and a vinyl single on April 14, 2009.[19][20][21] In France, "Halo" was released as a stand-alone digital download on March 20, 2009.[22] On the same date, it was serviced digitally alongside the album version of "Diva" in mainland Europe,[23] including Germany,[24] where the song was additionally serviced as a CD single and a vinyl single on April 3, and April 12, 2009, respectively.[25][26] In the United Kingdom, a digital EP containing the album version and three remixes of "Halo" was released on April 13, 2009.[27][28]
Composition and lyrical interpretation
""Halo" is a contemporary down-tempo power ballad,[29][30] which features an R&B and pop production, as written by Christian Williams of Billboard magazine.[11] Also containing elements of gospel and soul music,[31][32] the song is composed using common time in the key of A major with a moderate tempo of 84 beats per minute, and is built on the chord progression A–Bm–F♯m–D.[33] It is written in the common verse-chorus form and features backing vocals.[33] Knowles' vocal spans from C♯3 to F♯5,[33] and incorporates usage of her melisma.[34] "Halo" is instrumentally complete with a piano, keyboards, big drums, a synthesizer undercurrent, strings, and percussion instruments.[35][32][36][37] The cascading piano work is augmented by handclaps and percussive beats, provided by a stomp box.[38][29][35][32] The song also consists of symphonic swells and electronic accents.[31]
Lyrically, "Halo" features Knowles as the female protagonist professing her all encompassing love to her heavenly lover with open-hearted emotion.[32][39][31] Knowles said, "['Halo'] is angelic, ... like you see [angels'] faces instantly when you hear it. [Its lyrics are] basically saying that I had these walls built up about love; you completely tore them down and when I look at you I see your halo, it's really beautiful."[40] The song's opening lines are, "Remember those walls I built? Well, baby, they’re tumbling down",[31] as Knowles' voice dips in and out of vibratos—a musical effect consisting of a regular, pulsating change of pitch—and trills, which are musical ornaments consisting of a rapid alternation between two adjacent notes.[29] She initially sings in a lower register, which gradually increases the power of her voice as the song proceeds.[7] On the pre-chorus lines, Knowles chants, "Everywhere I'm looking now, I'm surrounded by your embrace, baby I can see your halo, you know you're my saving grace".[30] She echoes the word "Halo" on the chorus,[7] which is complemented by strings and percussion.[35]
Controversies
According to Simon Cowell, owner of music production company Syco Entertainment, Bogart and Tedder originally intended "Halo" for his client, singer Leona Lewis.[1][42] Cowell was upset that Knowles claimed the song. David Balls, editor of the British media website Digital Spy, interviewed Tedder about the rumor. Balls asked Tedder whether "Halo" was originally penned for Leona Lewis, and Tedder answered that he had only tentatively offered the track to Lewis after Knowles took a long time to record it.[43] He commented:
There was this huge scandal that originally 'Halo' was meant to go to Leona. That was never the case ... That song was written for Beyoncé. What happened was that Beyoncé waited long enough to record that song ... I thought this would be a brilliant first single for Leona, which it would have. ... What I did was foolishly say to Leona's camp, 'I have it on hold for another A-list artist and I'm pretty sure they'll take it, but if they don't, I just want to know if you like it enough to consider it'. I sent it to them and they flipped on it. They loved it and instantly said they wanted to do it. I was like, 'Wait, wait, wait, no, it's not free yet!'"[43]
Soon after, Tedder worked with Kelly Clarkson on her fourth studio album, All I Ever Wanted (2008), and one of the songs they wrote together was "Already Gone".[41] When the song came out, many critics noted its resemblance to Knowles' "Halo".[44] Clarkson was unaware of any similarities between her song and Knowles' one.[45] She eventually weighed in after realizing their resemblance when she listened to both of them closely; the similarities are most notable in the backing track, which consists of a melancholy piano, loud drums, and handclaps.[44] Clarkson battled to prevent "Already Gone" from being included on All I Ever Wanted, but the decision was out of her hands as her album was already being printed when I Am... Sasha Fierce came out.[41] She accused Tedder of using the same arrangement on both "Already Gone" and "Halo", and complained that people would incorrectly assume she was stealing it from Knowles.[41] Clarkson was furious and confronted him on the phone.[41]
In response to Clarkson's dissatisfaction, Tedder commented that he would never give two artists the same musical arrangement, and that the criticism was "hurtful and absurd".[46] He asserted that the concept, melodies, and lyrics of "Already Gone" and "Halo" are completely different.[46] Calling "Already Gone" one of the best songs he has ever composed, Tedder added that he challenges people to listen to the two ballads, and form their own views.[46] Clarkson discouraged her label, RCA, from releasing the song as a single because she respected Knowles,[47] but they went against her will and released it.[41] She said, "It's one of those things I have no control over. I already made my album. At this point, the record company can do whatever they want with it."[48] Clarkson later told James Montgomery of MTV News that it was unfortunate "Already Gone" and "Halo" sound so similar, but noted that at least they have different vocal melodies.[45]
Critical reception
Reviews
Christian Williams of Billboard magazine wrote that the pop sound of "Halo" should take it to the summit of the charts.[11] He added that comparisons could be made to Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love" (2007), but concluded, "[Tedder] hangs high on its own merits".[11] Michael Slezak of Entertainment Weekly described "Halo" as a glorious and perfectly produced song, which has the potential to be as commercially successful as "Irreplaceable" (2007) and "Crazy in Love" (2003).[35] Joey Guerra of the Houston Chronicle wrote that it is an immediate standout on I Am... Sasha Fierce.[31] Matos Michaelangelo of The A.V. Club commented that Knowles has "a real flair for grandeur", praising the "big and wide" melodies of "Halo".[49] Jennifer Cady of E! Online wrote that the song is "perfect for some kind of romantic mixtape".[50] James Montgomery of MTV News noted that the "tear-jerking power" of "Halo" reveals "sides of Beyoncé we never knew existed".[51] Ryan Dombal of Pitchfork Media noted that Knowles' vocal delivery is "strident and exposed", reminiscent of Céline Dion's style.[39]
Noting the "garden-variety lyrics" of the ballad, James Reed of The Boston Globe wrote that "Halo" is the most evocative power ballad Knowles has ever recorded and sounds like the work done by American record producer and songwriter Phil Spector on his Wall of Sound mixing board.[10] Several music critics have highlighted the similarities of "Halo" to Rihanna's "Umbrella" (2007). Alexis Petridis of The Guardian noted that "Halo" has the same "icy synths, drivetime rock dynamic, and a similar repetitive chorus",[37] a view echoed by Jennifer Vineyard of MTV News[7] and Brent DiCrescenzo of Timeout, who viewed "Halo" as a "Bette Midler–level hymn from ['Umbrella'], lift[ing its] savior theme".[52] Nick Levine of Digital Spy described the "Halo" as a "muscular hybrid" of "Umbrella" and Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love".[53] David Balls of the same website wrote, "Halo' is a contemporary power ballad in the 'Bleeding Love' mould ... Could Lewis have pulled this off better? Well, that's a matter of opinion of course, but Mrs. Jay-Z doesn't leave much room for improvement."[30]
Awards and nominations
"Halo" was nominated for Best Single at the 2009 Urban Music Awards,[54] and for Best Love Song at the 2009 Teen Choice Awards.[55] It won Best Song at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2009.[56] The ballad was placed at number seven of Rap-Up's list of the 25 best songs of 2009.[57] "Halo" was nominated at the 52nd Grammy Awards, in the categories of Record of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, winning the latter.[58] It also won the Best Foreign Song at the 2010 Croatian Porin Awards.[59] The live version of "Halo", which is featured on I Am... Chart performance
"Halo" debuted at number 93 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart issue dated February 7, 2009.[63] The song peaked at number five on the chart issue dated May 23, 2009.[64] "Halo"'s US success meant that Knowles achieved more top 10 singles on the Hot 100 chart than any other female artist in the 2000s decade.[65] Spending thirty weeks in the top 40 of the Hot 100 chart, "Halo" last charted on the week ending August 29, 2009.[66] It peaked at number five on the US Pop Songs chart, at number one on the US Hot Dance Club Songs chart, and at number 16 on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.[67] The single was certified double-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on January 5, 2010, denoting shipment of two million copies.[68] By mid-July 2010, "Halo" had sold 2,518,000 digital downloads in the US.[69]
"Halo" debuted at number 40 on the New Zealand Singles Chart on February 2, 2009,[70] and peaked at number two three weeks later.[71] On February 15, 2009, it entered the ARIA Singles Chart at number 29.[72] The single, which peaked at number three,[73] left the top 40 on August 11, 2009.[74] "Halo" was certified triple-platinum by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA), denoting shipment of 210,000 copies.[75] On the Spanish Singles Chart, "Halo" debuted at number 45 on January 25, 2009, but it fell off the chart the following week.[76] However, the song re-entered the chart four months later on May 3, 2009, at number 44,[77] and peaked at number five on October 11, 2009.[78] It was certified double-platinum by the Productores de Música de España (PROMUSICAE), denoting shipment of 80,000 copies.[79]
The song initially charted for one week at number 107 in the UK shortly after the album's release on November 29, 2008.[80] After its announcement as a single, "Halo" re-entered the UK Singles Chart at number 98 on February 27, 2009,[81] and over a period of six weeks, it climbed to number four on April 4, 2009.[82] It spent almost a year on the UK Singles Chart, was at number 60 on July 9, 2010, forty-three weeks after its debut, and left the chart the following week.[83] The song peaked at number one on the UK Airplay Chart for five weeks.[84] "Halo" was certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), denoting shipment of 400,000 copies.[85]
Music video
The accompanying music video for "Halo" premiered exclusively on the US iTunes Store along with the music video for "Diva" on December 23, 2008.[35] Philip Andelman directed the music video, which was shot in late November 2008.[86] It features actor Michael Ealy as Knowles' love interest.[87] Ealy accepted to work with Knowles as he immediately loved the song after hearing it.[88] "Halo" marks the second time he was asked to star in a video for a song by Knowles, the first being "Irreplaceable", which he refused as he did not appreciate its theme and concept.[88] He told Knowles, "Call me when you have a hero role."[88] Knowles commented that the video is an intimate and romantic. She added that "the house in which we were shooting is beautiful.[40] And I was trying to make sure that we can get to the pool because I thought it could be really beautiful."[40]
The video begins as Knowles stands against a wall, illuminated by light that passes through a window. Scenes variously show different parts of the house. In one scene, Knowles, in a skin tight leotard, performs a dance choreography while her love interest looks down at her from a balcony. She pays homage to the 1983 romantic drama film Flashdance while executing the brief dance routine, as noted by Michael Slezak of Entertainment Weekly.[35] Knowles and Ealy later look adoringly at each other as they snuggle up on a sofa. During the climax, Knowles is underwater dressed in white, moving slowly upwards. As the chorus begins, she opens her eyes. After Ealy kisses the back of Knowles' neck, the pair come face to face in a bed scene, with lying down with Ealy above her in the final scene. The video was ranked at number 74 on BET's Notarized: Top 100 Videos of 2009 countdown.[89] Jennifer Cady of E! Online wrote that the bright shiny lights in the video "make her [Knowles] look like an angel".[50] Alison Maloney of The Sun praised Knowles' "amazing figure".[90]
An alternate video surfaced online in late May 2010 as an explanation of the reason for which Knowles was remembering her love interest in the original version.[87][91] It begins with the view of the night sky and many trees, as Knowles drives a car and her love interest is chased by the police through a forest. As the video progresses and her lover is still being chased, she parks her car on the side of the road. Various scenes of the original version are shown. A dog eventually catches the man and attacks him vigorously. An open bag reveals stolen money, which is spread by the wind. At the end of the video, Knowles is in the forest, lying lifelessly on the ground.[87]
Live performances
Knowles' first live performance of "Halo" was at the 2009 NAACP Awards on February 12, 2009.[92][93] She also sang the song on The Late Show with David Letterman after an interview on April 22, 2009,[94][95] and on NBC's Today the following day.[96] The song was later added to the set list of her I Am... Tour in 2009–10.[97][98] It was performed during the concert's encore.[97][98] After Knowles finished her "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" performance, she sang "Halo". Her act consisted of her singing the ballad on stage, but later, she descended from it to shake hands with everybody in the front rows.[98] The song was included on her CD/DVD live albums I Am... Yours: An Intimate Performance at Wynn Las Vegas (2009)[99] and I Am... World Tour (2010).[100] Knowles performed the "Halo" live at the Glastonbury Festival in front of more than 175,000 spectators on June 26, 2011. It served as the closing song of the festival.[101] During the ITV special A Night With Beyoncé which aired on December 4, 2011, in the United Kingdom, she sang the ballad to a selected crowd of fans.[102]
On June 25, 2009, Michael Jackson died while Knowles was touring,[103] prompting her to pay tribute to him at some of the venues of the tour, including Atlanta, Georgia[104] on July 1, 2009;[103] and New Orleans, Louisiana on July 3, 2009.[105] During the tribute, an image of Jackson was shown on the main screen. She changed the lyrics to "Michael I can see your Halo / I pray your music won't fade away".[105] On January 12, 2010, Haiti was struck by an earthquake. A charity telethon called Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief was organized on January 22, 2010, where many artists, including Knowles, participated.[106][107] She performed "Halo" with Coldplay's Chris Martin playing the piano for an acoustic rendition.[106][108] To make the song match the night's purpose,[109] Knowles weaved "Haiti" its lyrics, singing "Haiti, we can see your halo / You know you're my saving grace / You're everything I need and more, it's written all over your face / Haiti, we can see your halo / I pray you won't fade away".[110] This version was included on the 2010 live album Hope for Haiti Now.[110]
Cover versions and usage in media
In 2009, "Halo" was covered by Florence and the Machine on BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge.[111] Elementary school group PS22 chorus, covered "Halo" and "Single Ladies" during 2009 Billboard's Women In Music luncheon held at The Pierre in New York City.[112] During the 2009 MTV Europe Music Awards, American singer Katy Perry performed a mash-up of "Halo" and the other nominees for Best Song at the same ceremony.[113][114] American singer Mike Posner also covered the ballad with different lyrics and placed it on his 2009 album A Matter of Time.[115][116] According to a writer of MTV, his rendition is "such a refreshing take on the original".[116] "Halo" is featured on the British compilation album Now! 73.[117] The song was mixed with "How to Break a Heart" by the band Westlife on their 2010 Where We Are Tour.[118] "Halo" has been covered by other musicians, including ceo and Harper Blynn.[119][120] Marc Hogan of Pitchfork Media wrote that no cover has been "quite as inspired or as perversely logical" as the one by ceo.[119] Built essentially on bumpy beats, their version makes use of an acoustic guitar, 1980s-stylized electric guitar, strings as well as horns, and ends with a rapped outro.[119] A cover of "Halo" by Major Lazer with lead vocals provided by Elephant Man, was posted on the former's Twitter account a night after Knowles won Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 2011 Grammy Awards.[121] Simon Vozick-Levinson of Entertainment Weekly commented that their version "stays fairly close to the original, except with Elephant Man growling instead of Beyoncé belting the verses".[122]
"Halo" was blended with "Walking on Sunshine" by Katrina and the Waves on the Fox Broadcasting Company television show Glee, in the episode "Vitamin D".[123] Released as a single, their version peaked at number four on the Irish Singles Chart,[124] number nine on the UK Singles Chart,[125] number 10 on the ARIA Singles Chart,[126] number 28 on the Canadian Hot 100 chart,[127] and number 40 on the Hot 100 chart.[128] It was certified gold by ARIA, denoting shipment of 35,000 copies.[129] The mash-up was included on the set list of their debut concert Glee Live! In Concert!.[130] "Halo" was included on the international soundtrack of India – A Love Story, an Emmy-winning Brazilian soap opera.[131]
